Definition

1. The Canadian Council on Learning (CCL, 2009) emphasized the contribution of e-learning to a life-long-learning concept: “E-learning provides students the flexibility to learn at their own pace at any stage in the lifespan - thereby fostering positive attitudes about the value of lifelong learning.”

2. Khan (2005), defined e-learning as "an innovative approach for delivering well-designed, learner-centered, interactive, and facilitated learning environment to anyone, anyplace, anytime by utilizing the attributes and resources of various digital technologies along with other forms of learning materials suited for an open, flexible, and distributed learning environment."

3. Moore (2006), noted "E-learning is the delivery of learning, training or education program by electronic means.”

4. Abbas et al.(2005), stated that: “E-learning can be defined as a wide set of applications and processes, which uses available electronic media (and tools) to deliver vocational education and training”

5. Koohang & Harman (2005) defined e-learning as “the delivery of education through various electronic media. The electronic media could be the Internet, intranets, satellite TV, video/audio tape, and/or CD-ROM”.

6. Qvortrup (2006) e-learning was defined as “the use of new multimedia technologies and the Internet to improve the quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration”.

7. Horton (2006) defined "using computer and Internet to create learning experiences."

Summary

Numerous research have defined a word 'E-learning', for instance, E-learing is utilized to simplify leaning skills throuth elcetronic tools; TV, internet, intranet, CD-ROM, tape, and etc (Abbas et al, 2005; Koohang & Harman, 2005;Moore,2006). Moreover, E-learing is refered to the use of digital technology for collaborating, adapting and enduring learning (CCL,2009; Khan,2005;Qvortrup, 2006).

Our own definition

E-learning is informal education through multimedia for lifelong learning (Siwaphon, Unchalee & Yokfa, 2011).

Re: Definitions of E-learning

โดย ศิวกรณ์ -
E-learning is regarded as a combination of various kind of technologies e.g. computer technology, computer networks, communication technology, telecommunication technology to be utilized to support delivery of information or knowledge for learning and teaching in the era of globalization (Thugsakul, 2011).

1. E-Learning is the use of telecommunication technology to deliver information for education and training. With the progress of information and communication technology development, e-Learning is emerging as the paradigm of modern education. The great advantages of e-Learning include liberating interactions between learners and instructors, or learners and learners, from limitations of time and space through the asynchronous and synchronous learning network model (Katz, 2000] , [Katz, 2002] and [Trentin, 1997]

2. Rosenberg (2001) e-Learning depends on internet technology and is typically a networked form of learning based on a more general concept of learning which transcends the traditional paradigms.

3. e-Learning all forms of electronic supported learning and teaching, which are procedural in character and aim to effect the construction of knowledge with reference with individual experience, practice, and knowledge of the learners. Information and communication systems, whether networked or not, serve as specific media (specific in the sense elaborated previously) to implement the learning process (Nolting & Roser and Tavangarian, 2004).

Marc Rosenberg (2001) defines e-learning as the use of internet technologies to enhance knowledge and performance based upon three fundamental criteria:

  • networked

  • delivered to the end-user via a computer using standard internet technology

  • focuses on the broadest view of learning

Allison Rossett (2001) defines e-learning as Web-based training (WBT), also known as e-learning and on-line learning, is training that lives in a server or host computer that is connected to the World Wide Web.

Another one is Clark Adrich (2004). He defines e-learning as a wide combination of processes, content, and communications to use computers and networks to improve one or more significant parts of learning.

Similarly, e-learning is the tool for learners to access through the endless world and learn everything via the ICT innovation such as computer and all kinds of internet technologies.

Dear Ajarn Poranee and my friends,

Here are the definitions of e-learning from different scholars;

1. The delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material (Derek Stockley 2003).

2. E-learning: “e-learning is a broader concept [than online learning], encompassing a wide set of applications and processes which use all available electronic media to deliver vocational education and training more flexibly. The term “e-learning” is now used in the Framework to capture the general intent to support a broad range of electronic media (Internet, intranets, extra-nets, satellite broadcast, audio/video tape, interactive TV and CD-ROM) to make vocational learning more flexible for clients.” (Anta 2003b, p. 5).

3. Allison Rossett (2001) defines elearning as: Web-based training (WBT), also known as e-learning and on-line learning, is training that resides on a server or host computer that is connected to the World Wide Web. She considers WBT or elearning as belonging to Technology-Based Training — training that is delivered partially or entirely through electronic hardware, software, or both (p161).

And this is my own definition for e-learning "E-learning is the process of motivating learning through internet. Language learners have more chance to expose to the language and its online exercises on the spot. Moreover, e-learning is the easy and moderate investment for language learners because everybody can access a considerable and endless knowledge via computer, notebook, smartphone, and iPad etc.".
