Oxforddictionary.com  defined e-learning as learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet. 

Naidu (2006) gave definition of e-learning that it referred to the intentional use of networked  information and communications technology in teaching and learning. A number of other terms are also used to describe this mode of teaching and learning. They include online learning virtual learning, distributed learning, network and web-based learning.

Rossett (2001) defined elearning as: Web-based training (WBT), also known as elearning and on-line learning, is training that resides on a server or host computer that is connected to the World Wide Web.

In conclusion, E-learning is learning by using computer, internet, and technologies in distributing knowledge via network, web-based , database online and so on.

1. Derek Stockley (2003) The delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material. 

2. Marc Rosenberg (2001) confines e-learning to the internet as: the use of internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance. It is based upon three fundamental criteria:

  • networked
  • delivered to the end-user via a computer using standard internet technology
  • focuses on the broadest view of learning

3. Department of Computer, University of Liverpool (2007)defines E-learning is learning which is enhanced, supported or assessed by the use of electronic media. E-learning may involve the use of new or established technology and/or the creation of new learning material; it may be deployed both locally and at a distance.

4. Antaseeda and Chaisong (2012) defines e-learning is the use of new technologies and social network as tools or instruments to support teaching and learning.

Three definitions from scholars

1. CALL is any process in which a learner uses a computer and, as a result, improves his or her language (Beatty, 2003).

2. Hardisty and Windeatt (1989) states the CALL is a term used by teachers and students to describe the use of computers as part of a language course (p. 198).

3. A further definition for CALL can be found in the Wikipedia article and it says “Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is an approach to language teaching and learning in which computer technology is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element” (Wikipedia, 2012).

 

A summarized sentence

CALL is any process concerns with computer and technology that facilitates teaching and learning language.
